Book Recommendation: The Last Dictatorship in Europe - Belarus under Lukashenko by Brian Bennett

I highly recommend the book The Last Dictatorship in Europe - Belarus under Lukashenko by Brian Bennett. Bennett is a British diplomat, and his posting as British Ambassador to Belarus from 2003 to 2007 gave him a front row seat to some of Lukashenko's consolidation of power. The book provides a detailed account of Belarus from independence, and its accompanying hope, to its descent into autocracy. This book was crucial to my understanding of how the president amassed power, as I wrote The Riddle of the Trees.
